Abstracting the Landscape, Palette Knife Plus with Andrew Sookrah

March 8th, 1:00 – 4:00 on zoom

Cost: Member $30, Non-Member $40

Painting with a palette knife (and other miscellaneous objects!) is a step way out of our comfort zone. But hanging out in our comfort zone is like staying on a ledge, we will never get to the next level.

In this workshop, Andrew encourages everyone to step out of the familiar and with a palette knife and acrylic paints, find that abstract, graphic presence that is at the core of every landscape painting. This course will teach artists to explore composition, design, movement, line, unity & colour with dramatic texture.

Whether beginners wishing to start developing a style of their own, or established artists looking to refine their style with palette knife and acrylics, this promises to be a ton of fun!

Andrew will begin with an overview of the basics: Drawing techniques, perspective, composition, colour, texture & use of materials.

His format for the day is to lead everyone through the process by working from a common image. Starting with a 15 min demo with commentary and a brief discussion, artists then paint for 30 minutes with feedback and guidance. Following this with a 10-minute demo, artists again painting for 30 minutes, with review, feedback and guidance to the end of the session. He finishes with a critique and guidance for moving forward.

About the Artist: Andrew Cheddie Sookrah is a professional artist/teacher living and working in Toronto, and an elected member of Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, Society of Canadian Artists (Honourary, Mentor), Ontario Society of Artists, and Portrait Society of Canada. He was one of the contestants in the Landscape Artists of the Year Canada Competition, episodes can be seen on CBC TV’ GEM Documentary streaming service. Sookrah is a raw colourist whose free brushwork is confident and powerful. His strengths can be seen in his strong sense of design, exquisite use of effective composition & confident presentation of bold colours. His is a masterful expression of the inter-connectivity of everything.
