Artist Paul Whittam is from the Sheshegwaning First Nation on Manitoulin Island. He was adopted when he was just ten weeks old. It was not until after his studies at Trent University that he found out who is birth mother was and that he reconnected with her. Negik, which means Otter, is the Spirit name that Paul Whittam was given by an elder during a traditional naming ceremony. Accordingly, he creates art under the pseudonym Star Otter Art.
For him, his art is visual healing through color, shape and form. Paul Whittam took the Ojibwe Woodland style and transformed it into his very own style. The artist’s Spirit animal, the otter, can be seen in some of his pieces. Paul Whittam is a mostly self-taught artist but attended the Georgian College Art Fundamentals program and also took several art courses while earning an Indigenous Studies honor degree at Trent University.
